At 50 The Brookhurst Theatre Closes Once Again

May 5th, 2011 by ccrouch

Anaheim’s long struggling Brookhurst Theatre has closed yet again. The venue’s latest (perhaps final) incarnation lasted less than two years.

Stopping by the location this evening, I found the theatre returned to a state of disarray; much of 2009’s significant remodeling scavenged by the venue’s most recent operator, Tri Stone. While the Brookhurst has somehow managed to rise from the proverbial ashes time and time again, one has to suspect this marks the end of the line. A sad and quiet swan song, after a fifty year run.

My Family moved away form Anaheim in 1968, but I still remember when the theater first opened, and spending many a Saturday afternoon there watching first run movies like ‘Follow Me, Boys” and “The Pit and the Pendulum”. I was always carefully budgeting my money so I could have an ice cream cone during the second feature. Yes, a ticket got you a double feature back in those days!
It was a get way to see another movie that would sometimes be better than the top billed entry. The specific one I remember was “The Dirty Dozen”.
