I stopped by Grauman’s Chinese Theatre today. My primary objective was to finally get around to taking the official tour (like many Southern California residents, I often neglect to take advantage of such offerings). However, a secondary motivation was rooted in the controversial rumors that are currently hanging over the theatre’s pending change in ownership.
.
For those who haven’t been keeping up wit the news/rumors/gossip, there are alleged plans to either convert Grauman’s back to being a multi use venue (reinstate live events and possibly rebuild the stage) or, according to more hysterical sources, turn the world’s most famous theatre in to a nightclub.
As to what I managed to uncover; while the theatre’s staff likely aren’t privileged to long term plans, I was left with the impression that Grauman’s will continue on as a movie venue for the foreseeable future. Much of the current staff has been offered continued employment and there remain films/premiers booked for several months to come. If I had to speculate, I would surmise the modern Chinese 6 annex would be the only venue with a questionable future.
.
So, happy 84th to Grauman’s Chinese. May your golden doors continue to welcome the movie going world for many more years to come.
