To answer a couple of questions I’ve received about this picture:
“Date?” There was no date attached to the photo. Given the fullness of Sid’s face, I’m going to guess 1930’s. Pictures from the 20’s tend to show a more youthful/sleek appearance; by the 1940’s, he had white hair and exhibited a somewhat frail look. It’s always hard to date Sid’s middle Chinese years, as he drifted in and out of involvement with the theatre during this period.
“Wasn’t Sid Grauman Jewish?” Yes, but he was also known for celebrating Christmas with great zeal (as was much of early Hollywood). Besides, one can enjoy the spirit of the season no matter what their religious affiliation.
