Yesterday, I posted on AMC Mainplace\u00a0<\/a>being the first Orange County theatre to break the $6 ticket barrier. Following a\u00a0quick bit of research, I ran across some additional “controversial” ground this venue broke in the county.<\/div>\n

  • In August of 1988, Mainplace held the Orange County exclusive\u00a0engagement\u00a0for “The Last Temptation of Christ”. The film’s\u00a0religiously controversial subject matter saw all other county\u00a0cinemas pass on the booking.<\/li>\n
  • In May of 1989, Mainplace\u00a0set a new high in\u00a0county ticket prices, with a $6.50 adult admission; in conjunction\u00a0with the release of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”.<\/li>\n
  • In October of 1990, Mainplace was among the first theatres to show an NC-17 rated film, with “Henry\u00a0and June” (the first film to obtain the, then new, adult rating).\u00a0 The\u00a0film’s Mainplace screening was the site of a well publicized protest\u00a0by local activists.<\/li>\n
  • In October of 1998, Mainplace\u00a0was the sole Orange County cinema to screen “Orgasmo”; an extremely limited release, NC-17 rated comedy,\u00a0from the creators of the\u00a0“South Park”,\u00a0that lampooned pornography and\u00a0the Mormon church.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Demonstrating how drastically tides can turn within the ever changing world of cinema, the theatre’s current operator, Picture Show Entertainment,\u00a0is better known for “wholesome”\u00a0entertainment and discount ticket prices. The theatre, which once tested the limits of county tastes and pocket books, now caters to families and offers the\u00a0county’s lowest ticket prices.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
