{"id":662,"date":"2010-11-27T07:00:18","date_gmt":"2010-11-27T07:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cinelog.org\/cinelog\/?p=662"},"modified":"2010-11-27T07:00:18","modified_gmt":"2010-11-27T07:00:18","slug":"holiday-season-85-a-trio-of-openings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinelog.org\/cinelog\/2010\/11\/27\/holiday-season-85-a-trio-of-openings\/","title":{"rendered":"Holiday Season 85&#8242;: A Trio of Openings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Twenty five years ago, Edwards opened a trio of theatres on the Southern California market, just in time for the holiday season of 1985.\u00a0All three\u00a0venues offered the latest in multiplex amenities and met with instant success, but each\u00a0experienced differing fates,\u00a0following Edwards&#8217; millennium implosion.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cinelog.org\/cinelog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/EdwardsNovember85.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-663\" style=\"border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"Edwards November 85\" src=\"http:\/\/cinelog.org\/cinelog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/EdwardsNovember85-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinelog.org\/cinelog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/EdwardsNovember85-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinelog.org\/cinelog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/EdwardsNovember85-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cinelog.org\/cinelog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/EdwardsNovember85.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Exemplifying\u00a0the\u00a0mid\/late 80&#8217;s\u00a0multiplex\u00a0movement,\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/occinema.com\/2007\/08\/30\/charter-center\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charter Centre 5<\/a>, Foothill Center 6, and <a href=\"http:\/\/occinema.com\/2007\/08\/30\/village-center\/#more-164\" target=\"_blank\">Village Center 6<\/a> were a significant step up from the\u00a0sub par shoe boxes that had dominated the multi screen cinema scene of the previous decade.\u00a0Offering larger auditoriums and\u00a0higher quality presentation standards, these venues\u00a0sought to raise the bar on the multiplex experience, while still taking advantage of the format&#8217;s efficient business model. Designed, in what would come to be Edwards&#8217; 80&#8217;s through early 90&#8217;s signature style, the three venues fell within the company&#8217;s two stock layouts of the era; featuring two story glass front\u00a0lobbies, that were either traditional in-line (Foothill 6\u00a0and Village 6) or angled (Charter Centre) floor plans, with auditoriums accessed off of a single hallway. Between these improved facilities, high traffic locations, and a string of 80&#8217;s blockbusters, all three sites\u00a0became top draws for their respective areas, setting the tone for Edwards&#8217; multiplex heyday.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>As with most county multiplexes of the time, these three cinemas had a somewhat short run as top tier attractions. By the turn of the decade, theatre standards had been raised further and a host of new, more expansive venues had\u00a0taken over (often Edwards&#8217; own builds). Additionally, Edwards\u00a0exercised a problematic pattern of neglecting earlier builds, in favor of their &#8220;latest and greatest&#8221; creations; frequently allowing &#8220;older&#8221; theatres to languish in disrepair, further alienating\u00a0the site&#8217;s\u00a0customer base. By the time the megaplex era hit and Edwards began a quick spiral in to bankruptcy, all three sites had fallen in to near irrelevance.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Fortunately, at least for two of the sites, Regency Theatres stepped in and took over both the Foothill Center and Charter Centre, after Edwards (fresh off of their Regal Entertainment Group takeover) shuddered the sites. The Foothill ultimately garnered a full makeover, expansion,\u00a0and stadium\u00a0seating upgrade, as the theatre experienced a rebirth under Regency&#8217;s\u00a0management.
